T.C. Steele (1847 – 1926)

T.C. Steele was already 60 years old when he built his “House of the Singing Winds” on a hilltop in Brown County, Indiana. His arts and crafts bungalow featured an eastside arbor, or pergola, over the driveway. In summer, the structure can still be seen covered with wisteria vines.

This painting shows emerging daffodils and a distant view of the north slope from the house. Steele’s long driveway leads to the county road that eventually meets State Road 46. In 1907, when the house was built, it took the better part of a day to reach Nashville.
