Touring theatrical companies like The Golden Troupe, based in New Harmony, Indiana, were tremendously popular in the mid-nineteenth century. From 1875 to 1891, the troupe toured throughout the Midwest, South and Southwest. The Golden Troupe was managed by Martin Golden. The star of the Troupe was his wife, Bella. All four of their children, Martin Jr., William, Grace and Frances participated. The Troupe traveled with their own musicians, the “Superb Silver Band and Orchestra”, and a group of 15 to 20 professional actors. The Golden Troupe dissolved following an injury to Bella while on tour.
