Limberlost State Historic Site: Land of the Limberlost
The Limberlost marsh was the perfect laboratory for Gene Stratton-Porter to study nature. In a time when most women were homemakers, Stratton-Porter created a lasting legacy of northern Indiana’s vanishing natural history through her published novels, nature studies and photographs.

Learn about the home and natural environment that inspired Gene Stratton-Porter to write her bestsellers; Indiana’s original ecosystem; Gene’s role as a naturalist; and how technology, culture and family life has evolved since the late 19th century.

Homeschool students and their families move through stations uncovering the fascinating world of author and naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter and the natural science behind the famous Limberlost Swamp. Remember to bring a sack lunch to eat on the grounds.
Walk Like A Naturalist
Sept. 26, 2012; 9:15 – 11:30 a.m.
$3 per child; one free adult for every six children; reservations required
Preschoolers can learn to walk like a naturalist through colorful hands-on exploration of plant and animal habitats, meet wetland creatures, make a nature-inspired craft to take home and learn about famous Indiana naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter.

Request a specialized program from our Academic Topics — from encountering reptiles and amphibians and identifying wildflowers to discovering Indiana History and birds of prey … and so much more.
Programs can include hands-on activities for children, promote environmental and natural history education, and help students discover Indiana History by learning about Indiana author, photographer and naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter.
SCOUT PROGRAMS
Brownie Eco-Explorer Try-It Badge Workshop
Oct. 1, 2011; 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
$4 per Girl Scout; chaperones free; reservations required
Learn about Gene Stratton-Porter and her love for nature. Explore the Limberlost Swamp. Discover the meaning of “ecology”, animal habitats and create a diorama to take home. Try-It achievement is available separately from the Girl Scout office.
Sharing Your World with Wildlife
Oct. 6, 2012; 1 – 5 p.m.
$6 per Scout; chaperones free; reservations required
Cub Scouts will earn Bear Achievement #5 by exploring the Loblolly Marsh Wetland Preserve, discovering the life and legacy of naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter, interacting with a conservation officer and other activities. Badge not included.
