Whitewater Canal State Historic Site: Water Wheels and Canal Boat

SCHOOL GROUP TOUR
Whitewater Canal School Group Tour
May – October 2011; May – October 2012
Grades K – 12
Fee: Students pay $1 each per activity; Pre-registration required at least two weeks in advance.
Activities:
• 25-minute canal boat tour on the Ben Franklin III canal boat through the only wooden aqueduct left in America
• Interactive educational program at the Metamora Mill, an authentic working grist mill
• Rope making or Belgian draft horse hitching demonstrations
 
EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS
Differently-Abled Awareness Program
September – October 2011; May – October 2012
Grades PreK – 12
Fee: $5 per student; Pre-registration required at least two weeks in advance
Discover the capabilities of people and animals that are differently-abled. Listen to a story, learn about the disabilities of our horse Bill, enjoy a hitching demonstration, take part in a craft, play a horse-related game and enjoy a canal boat ride on the Ben Franklin III Canal Boat.

How the Little Red Hen May Have Taken Her Corn Meal to Market Program
September – October 2011;
May – October 2012
Grade PreK – 1
Fee: $4 per student; Pre-registration required at least two weeks in advance
Preschool children will learn about different modes of transportation form the past, present and future and explore simple machines. Activities include a canal boat ride, a tour of the grist mill, storytelling with puppets and a craft project to take home.

Whitewater Garden School
April – September 2012; 9:30 a.m. –  11:30 a.m.
$2 per person
Students will discover the
beauty and importance of nature, the satisfaction of growing their own food, and the simple pleasure of picking a flower. The Whitewater Garden School also includes a historical perspective on food production and farm product marketing made available by the Whitewater Canal from the 1840s through 1860s. Our outdoor classroom offers a creative and interactive approach to use the process of growing flowers and vegetables to teach core curriculum standards.
 
FESTIVALS & EVENTS
Fifth Graders’ Civil War Day
April 20, 2012; 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.
$5 per student; reservations required by April 10.
Fifth graders will experience the sites, sounds and more of the Civil War with the Fifth Ohio Light Artillery Civil War Reenactors. Call site for details.

A Voyage Through Time: Life Along the Whitewater Canal
Sept. 15, 2012; 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
No admission fees charged except for canal boat rides on the Ben Franklin III. Reservations for the canal boat ride for large groups are recommended.
Home school groups and families are invited for a day of historic demonstrations at our site and throughout the town of Metamora. Indiana artisans will demonstrate fiber arts, blacksmithing, wood carving, sorghum molasses making, hearth cooking, and 1850's gardening and herbs. An Indiana group of Civil War Re-enactors will also make camp in the Metamora Grist Mill Park.
 
EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH
Building a State: The Story of the Whitewater Canal
November 2011 – April 2012
Grades 6 – 8
Fee: $3 per student; plus mileage after 50 miles ($50 minimum outreach fee)
Pre-registration required at least two weeks in advance.
This program engages students about the rich science and culture of Indiana and the Whitewater Canal. Activities focus on the Whitewater Canal and canal life as it was during the 1840s through 1860s. Students will also explore the science and engineering aspects of the canal.

SCOUT PROGRAMS
WEBELOS Engineering Activity Scout Badge
May 12, 2012; 1 – 4 p.m.
$5 per scout; reservations required by May 5
WEBELOS Scouts can fullfill requirements 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7 to help them earn their Engineering Badge. Scouts will take a canal boat ride, tour the grist mill, find out how water was used to generate electricity and meet a surveyor and engineer to learn about their jobs. Spaces are limited and reservations must be made by May 5.
