    Whitewater Canal State Historic Site

    See the techniques used to hitch up the horses who pull the Ben Franklin III Canal Boat down the Whitewater Canal. Demonstrations are at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m.

  • 2019 Indy Youth Poet Laureate Workshops and Commencement

    The Indianapolis Youth Poet Laureate Program (Indy YPL) launched in April 2019 under the leadership of VOICES—an education and arts non-profit centered on youth leadership and community development. The Indy YPL program will select one youth poet laureate who exemplifies the civic leadership and literary excellence required of a poet laureate.

    Along with the title of Indianapolis Youth Poet Laureate, Indy’s youth poet laureate will:

    • have their poems published in the National Youth Poet Laureate annual anthology (published by Penmanship Books);
    • be featured on the Youth Poet Laureate website with a picture and poem; and
    • have the opportunity to compete to become the National Youth Poet Laureate, which takes place in fall of 2019.

    Application requirements:

    • Five original poems written by the applicant
    • A resume/CV of the applicant’s civic leadership, achievements and extra-curricular involvement
    • Due May 20
    • Student must be an Indianapolis resident between the ages of 12 and 19
    • Submit applications to IndyYPL@gmail.com

    Applications will be reviewed by a racially and generationally diverse panel of judges who are connected to the literary arts and youth development communities in Indianapolis.

  • Young Explorers: Creating with Color

    Young explorers allows little ones to be a big kid during these 90-minute drop-off classes that encourage creativity, exploration and independence in an environment that fosters curiosity and imagination.

    This month, our young explorers will become scientists…and fashionistas! They will visit our Color of Style experience to discover stories, fashion and color, and will be inspired to create their own designs. Then, we’ll experiment with color creation and working with textiles. Other activities include story time, sensory play, and station time.
