Explore nine colors through more than 50 outfits from the museum’s historic clothing and costume collection. Consider how yellow speaks differently when used in an everyday summer cotton dress versus a high fashion silk Dior gown. Feel samples of the fabric and learn about some of the pieces from the eye of the designer and the wearer. You may be especially excited to see a stage costume worn by Jackie Jackson of Jackson 5, Katie Douglas of the Indiana Fever’s home game jersey and several pieces designed by well-known Indiana designers Bill Blass, Halston and Norman Norell.
Step into the Style Studio to design your own fashions through sketch and by dressing mannequins. You’ll also take a quiz to discover which color best represents you, cast your vote for 'who wore it better' and model accessories at the magazine cover selfie station. Plus, don’t miss the color tunnel—your opportunity to quite literally immerse yourself in color.
Be sure to see a special dress made by up-and-coming Indianapolis fashion designer, Yemisi Sanni, displayed alongside her inspiration board. Yemisi will also describe in a video how she chooses color for her designs. You’ll also learn about the crafts of local artists Kate Ellis, a textile artist who uses natural products found outdoors (or even in the grocery store) as dye, and Rowland Ricketts who specializes in dyeing with indigo. You’ll also find work by designer Alpha Blackburn, an artist, interior designer, philanthropist and current head of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission.
Packed with even more colorful activities, this experience is your opportunity to discover your world in a whole new hue.
