‘Color of Style’ exhibit set to open at Indiana State Museum

There’s a brand-new experience opening at the Indiana State Museum in March where you can explore color, style and what your own color preferences say about you.

Color of Style opens on March 16, and in this experience you’ll discover how who we are shapes how we dress and the colors that we choose to wear.

To start the exhibit, you’ll have a chance to walk through a tunnel of color to see how you feel when immersed in different colors. Then, take a quiz to discover the color that best represents you.

Inside the experience, you’ll find nine fashion pods featuring outfits from different decades – and centuries – divided by their colors: red, yellow, blue, green, orange, purple, pink, white and black. More than 50 outfits will be on display, from everyday wear from the 1800s, to a party dress from the 1920s and an outfit from the Jackson 5. Plus, you’ll find incredible pieces from iconic Hoosier designers Stephen Sprouse and Bill Blass.

Compare the styles and designs of long ago to modern-day Hoosier designers – including up-and-coming fashion designer Yemisi Sanni, artist and indigo dyer Rowland Rickets and textile artist Kate Ellis – through special videos throughout the exhibit. Fashions and stories from everyday Hoosiers will be featured throughout the exhibit, too.

After you soak in all the styles, you can get creative in our Style Studio, where you can sketch your own fashions, find ideas from inspiration boards and create patterns of your very own. Vote to determine “Who wore it better?” for various iconic fashions, try on colorful accessories and pose on the cover of a magazine.

Color of Style will be open and ready to explore March 16 through July 28, and the experience is included with purchase of general museum admission.
