INDIANAPOLIS (March 9, 2020) – On March 28, a new experience will open at the Indiana State Museum, featuring art from female artists with Indiana ties. These artists were inspired by various causes, from mental health or the environment to AIDS or immigration.
Cause and Æffect: Art That Speaks Out will feature works from 14 different artists in a variety of mediums, including paintings, tapestry, sculpture and more. The show is in honor of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage.
“We’re proud to feature the work of artists who are passionate about issues that affect us all – immigration, the environment and social justice,” said Cathy Ferree, president and CEO of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites. “They’ve created art that’s meant to affect us, and to cause an effect in our community. It challenges us to reflect, react and respond.”
The artwork is meant to spark conversation and debate among visitors about the various topics represented. Additionally, interactives will help visitors further explore the pieces. Touch a sample of a tapestry to learn why artist Charlene Marsh chose to highlight a deer hunt in her artwork. Use a guided-looking exercise to explore the symbolism in Hollis Sigler’s artwork inspired by breast cancer. And, learn about some of the female artists represented in Mary Beth Edelson’s artwork, a take on the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci.
At the end of the experience, visitors can write down what cause they feel passionately about, then take a picture to share on social media.
“Visitors will encounter artwork that is timely, thought-provoking and sometimes provocative,” said Mark Ruschman, senior curator of art and history for the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites. “With Cause and Æffect, we’ve assembled an exhibit that celebrates artistic expression and highlights the diverse talents and creative methods artists use to express their strongly held beliefs and opinions.”
Cause and Æffect will be open March 28 through July 6 and is included with purchase of general museum admission.
