Angel Mounds to host Spring Farm Fest
Sixth annual program to feature cultural lifeways of Native Americans
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The public is invited to attend Spring Farm Fest Saturday, March 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 19 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Angel Mounds State Historic Site.
Spring Farm Fest honors the farming heritage of Indiana, going all the way back to the Mississippian culture that farmed these fields over a thousand years ago. This year’s event features a working smoke house, beekeeping, hands-on activities with vintage farm equipment and samples of food from the turn of the 19th century.
“Spring Farm Fest has become one of the more popular events for Angel Mounds,” said Mike Linderman, Angel Mounds State Historic Site manager. “With society getting further and further away from the farming origins that made this country, people want to experience what is no longer daily life.”
A special aspect this year will be the unveiling of a vintage Keck-Gonnerman threshing machine, manufactured in Mount Vernon, Ind. more than 100 years ago. The Friends of Angel Mounds have acquired this piece and will begin restoration of the machine. Visitors will be able to get up close and personal with the machine and learn how threshing played an important role in early North American farming.
For a donation, horse rides will be available to benefit A Hoof and a Prayer Horse Rescue, a local organization that saves horses from abuse.
Admission is $5 per person; children 3 and under are free.
Spring Farm Fest is held in conjunction with the Southern Indiana Antique Machinery Club.
