‘Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay’ to kickoff in Corydon

INDIANAPOLIS — The public is invited to the kickoff of the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay on Friday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. in Corydon, Ind. The relay, scheduled to feature runners from all 92 Indiana counties, will pass through 11 of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites’ 12 historically significant locations.

The 11 historic locations on the relay route include Angel Mounds, Corydon Capitol, Culbertson Mansion, Gene Stratton-Porter, Historic New Harmony, Lanier Mansion, Levi Coffin, Limberlost, TC Steele, Vincennes and Whitewater Canal. The dates and times of the torch entering each historic location is detailed below.

Corydon Capitol State Historic Site
The kickoff event will take place in Corydon, Ind. on Friday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. Site staff will light the cauldron and participate as torch bearers. The public is to call 812.738.4890 or visit online at indianamuseum.org/corydon for more information.

Angel Mounds State Historic Site
The torch is scheduled to appear at Angel Mounds State Historic Site on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 3:30 p.m. For details on the arrival, please call 812.853.3956 or visit online at indianamuseum.org/angelmounds.

Historic New Harmony
The torch will stop at Historic New Harmony on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 12 p.m. (CST). The public is asked to call 800.231.2168 or visit online at indianamuseum.org/newharmony for details.

Vincennes State Historic Site
The torch will travel to the Vincennes State Historic Site on Sunday, Sept. 11 and remain in Knox County from 6 to 8 p.m. A site staffer will serve as a torch bearer. For more information, please call 812.882.7422 or visit online at indianamuseum.org/vincennes.

Culbertson Mansion State Historic Site
The torch will be at the Culbertson Mansion State Historic Site on Thursday, Sept. 15 and remain in Floyd County from 3 to 7 p.m. The public is asked to call 812.944.9600 or visit online at indianamuseum.org/culbertson for more information.

Lanier Mansion State Historic Site
The torch will be at the Lanier Mansion State Historic Site on Friday, Sept. 16, while it is in Jefferson County from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information, please call 812.273.0556 or visit online at indianamuseum.org/lanier.

Whitewater Canal State Historic Site
The torch will travel to the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site on Sunday, Sept. 18 and remain in Franklin County from noon to 2 p.m. For more information, please call 765.647.6512 or visit online at indianamuseum.org/whitewater.

T.C. Steele State Historic Site

Levi Coffin State Historic Site
The torch is scheduled to be at the Levi Coffin State Historic Site on Sunday, Sept. 25, while it is in Wayne County at 11:30 a.m. A Levi Coffin House staffer will serve as a torch bearer. For more information, please call 765.847.2432 or visit online at indianamuseum.org/levicoffin.

Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site
The torch will be in Noble County on Thursday, Sept. 29 and remain there from 1 to 4 p.m. A Gene-Stratton Porter staffer will carry the torch in Gene Stratton-Porter’s honor. For more information, please call 260.854.3790 or visit online at indianamuseum.org/gsp.

Limberlost State Historic Site
The final historic site the torch will arrive at is the Limberlost State Historic Site on Friday, Sept. 30, while it is in Adams County at 6 p.m. Limberlost staffers are scheduled to serves as torch bearers. About the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay
The Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay is designed to inspire and unify Hoosiers as one of the signature events of the 2016 Bicentennial celebration. Hoosiers will also symbolically “pass the torch” connecting generations to ignite our future. Patterned after the Olympic Torch Relay, Indiana’s version will pass through all 92 of the state’s counties, covering 3,200 miles over a five week period, averaging 97 miles per day.
