Peewinkle's Puppet Studio

Statement from the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites

As Peewinkle’s Puppet Studio has chosen to share information on the contractual agreement between Peewinkle’s and the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites (ISMHS) , we feel it is important that the ISMHS’s position in this situation be presented so there is no misunderstanding as we all move forward in the most constructive way possible.  We have always been, and will continue to be, supporters of Peewinkle’s product. The ISMHS simply needs this visible program space to serve our visitors.

  • The contract between Peewinkle’s and the ISM expired on August 31, 2018.  Since that time, we have allowed Peewinkle’s to operate at the ISM as we evaluated the use of the space, our own family programming, and our financial sustainability as a non-profit institution.
  • We met with Peewinkle’s staff in early June, giving them notice of our decision to utilize our space for ISMHS programming, asking them to vacate by August 31, 2019 – one year after the contract between our organizations had expired.
  • We have offered Peewinkle’s the use of other space in the museum.
  • As a non-profit organization, we have a responsibility to our visitors, donors, board of directors, partners and staff to utilize our resources in the best possible interest of the ISMHS.  As we evaluated how our spaces were being used, including the space currently occupied by Peewinkle’s, we realized that they were active in the space 59 days out of the year – less than two months.  We simply cannot afford to have this prime space dark for the majority of the year when we have camps, classes and educational opportunities for families that need to utilize this space year-round.
  • Peewinkle’s has operated in many locations in their 47 year-history, including downtown Nashville, IN, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Indiana Roof Ballroom and in a studio in downtown Indianapolis (25 E. Henry St.), among others.  Their studio at the ISMHS was never intended to be a permanent solution to their performance space needs.
  • We wish Peewinkle’s well as they continue their artistry in another venue – or here at the ISMHS should they choose to utilize other space options that we have presented.
