Understanding the Underground Railroad in Indiana

UNDERSTANDING THE PURPOSE OF CANALS

The use of canals in the early 19th century was important to the growth of the United States. Built between 1836 and 1863, the Whitewater Canal was meant to bring Indiana’s goods and produce to a wider audience. Students will learn how the canal was engineered using locks and an aqueduct bridge to cross the hilly terrain of southeastern Indiana. Q&A to follow.
