Youth Poet Laureate Program

Is one of your students the next Youth Poet Laureate?

Share this opportunity with your students to apply by May 20

The Indianapolis Youth Poet Laureate Program (Indy YPL) launched in April 2019 under the leadership of VOICES—an education and arts non-profit centered on youth leadership and community development. The Indy YPL program will select one youth poet laureate who exemplifies the civic leadership and literary excellence required of a poet laureate.

Along with the title of Indianapolis Youth Poet Laureate, Indy’s youth poet laureate will:

  • have their poems published in the National Youth Poet Laureate annual anthology (published by Penmanship Books);
  • be featured on the Youth Poet Laureate website with a picture and poem; and
  • have the opportunity to compete to become the National Youth Poet Laureate which takes place in fall of 2019.

Application requirements:

  • Five original poems written by the applicant
  • A resume/CV of the applicant’s civic leadership, achievements and extra-curricular involvement
  • Due May 20
  • Student must be an Indianapolis resident between the ages of 12 and 19

Applications will be reviewed by a racially and generationally diverse panel of judges who are connected to the literary arts and youth development communities in Indianapolis.
