A bequest, or a gift of personal property like cash or investments that someone designates to an organization in their will, can be made in a few different ways:
- When making a planned gift to the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites, you can choose how your bequest will be used. Unrestricted bequests are the most flexible, allowing the museum to allocate funds where they are needed most.
- Alternatively, you may restrict your bequest to support a specific program or area that aligns with your personal or professional interests. To ensure your gift remains impactful even if the designated purpose changes over time, we recommend including language that allows the museum to redirect the funds if necessary.
- Bequests can take the form of a specific gift—such as a set dollar amount, securities, real estate, or personal property—or a residuary bequest, which designates all or a portion of the remainder of your estate after other obligations are met.
Naming the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites as a beneficiary of your retirement plan is another way to make a significant gift while avoiding federal income and estate taxes on the donated funds. This ensures your legacy supports the museum’s programs in the most tax-efficient way possible.
