
Allison Karns began her career in 2004 in the Office of U.S. Congressman Chris Chocola (IN-02) as his Legislative Correspondent. After completing law school, Karns joined the Indiana State Senate from 2008 to 2009 as the Assistant Majority Counsel to the Senate Republican Caucus. Karns then moved to the Indiana Public Retirement System as the Legislative Director & Legal Counsel until 2013. Upon then-Governor Mike Pence’s election, Karns was appointed as General Counsel to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Then-Governor Pence asked Karns to join his Gubernatorial Staff in 2014 and oversee the state public safety portfolio.
Karns has served on many boards and commissions, both as counsel and as a member. When at the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Karns served as Counsel to the Counter-Terrorism and Security Council (CTASC), the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Commission, the Firefighting Personnel Standards & Education Commission, the Indiana Emergency Response Commission (IERC), the Indiana Secured School Safety Board, and the Regulated Amusement Device Safety Board. Karns was appointed by Governor Holcomb to the Indiana Code of Revision Commission in 2017 and was the Public Safety Chair for the Eric Holcomb Gubernatorial Transition Team from 2016-2017. She also served on the Board of the Junior League of Indianapolis.
Karns is currently the Chair of the Governor’s Residence Commission, the Secretary of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Citizens’ Academy Board, the Fundraising Chair of the St. Luke Catholic School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) Board, and St. Luke Catholic School First Grade Class Mom. Karns was a 2016 FBI Citizens’ Academy Graduate, a Lugar Series Graduate in 2014-2015 and a member of the Junior League of Indianapolis from 2009-2019, where she chaired Holiday Mart in 2013.
She has received the following awards: Sagamore of the Wabash, awarded by then-Governor Mike Pence in 2016, Sagamore of the Wabash awarded by Governor Eric Holcomb in 2018, Indy’s Best and Brightest, awarded by Junior Achievement of Central Indiana in 2017 and 2018, Forty Under Forty, awarded by Indianapolis Business Journal in 2018, and Grace Award Recipient awarded by the Junior League of Indianapolis in 2014.
Karns holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Indiana University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Indiana University McKinney School of Law. She was admitted to the Indiana Bar in 2008. Karns lives in Carmel, IN with her two daughters.
