The Great Outdoor Art Contest returns for its 38th year, continuing the creative tradition of Indiana’s oldest plein air painting contest. Visitors on this day will have the unique opportunity to observe artists from across Indiana as they create plein air paintings amidst the picturesque landscapes that inspired renowned Hoosier artist T.C. Steele.
Artists may arrive beginning at 7 a.m. to have their blank canvases stamped before heading out across the scenic grounds to paint. Visitors are encouraged to wander through the gardens and grounds throughout the day to watch as the artistic process unfolds in real time. Lunch will be available from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. for purchase in the visitor center. Artwork judging led by artist C.W. Mundy will begin at 2 p.m., followed by an awards announcement at 3 p.m. See complete contest guidelines here.
Tickets for spectators are $5/person. Additionally, visitors who want to tour historic buildings like the House of the Singing Winds and Steele’s large studio can purchase site admission ($12/adult, $10/senior, $7/youth).
In honor of the 100th anniversary of Steele’s passing, visitors can see rarely seen artworks and condolence letters addressed to his widow, Selma Neubacher Steele, while exploring the large studio.
Artists interested in competing can apply online until Sept. 12. Day-of registration will also be available until 11 a.m.
