The book Uncle Tom’s Cabin was a blockbuster, selling more copies than any other book in the 19th century other than the Bible. But from the time of its publication in 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel was controversial. It still is. Why? Join Dr. John Getz from the Harriet Beecher Stowe House in exploring the novel’s context, iconic characters and scenes, stollen versions of the story and the book’s revival by feminist critics. Participants will decide for themselves how effectively Harriet Beecher Stowe’s voice speaks to us and the issues we face today.
