Discover the rich history that makes Indianapolis a city worth celebrating

At Indy A to Z, you can discover not only the city, but the people who call it home. Through artifacts from the city’s past and present and hands-on interactives, Indy A to Z delves deep into our city’s history, culture and current happenings. From Artery to Zillion Reasons, this exhibit allows you to see Indy from a whole new perspective.

We are grateful to presenting sponsor OneAmerica Financial and supporting sponsor Efroymson Family Fund.

What to Expect

At Indy A to Z you’ll find a collection of letters marking 26 different spaces to explore! A large city map calls out some of Indy’s most significant places to be, while each of the A-Z lettered sections represent an aspect of Indianapolis’ culture and history.

Featured artifacts help tell the story of each section’s topic – like Kurt Vonnegut’s self-portrait for Written Word, a wanted poster of John Dillinger for Notorious crime in the Circle City, and Gen Con’s Genevieve dragon costume for Hospitable Hosts as Indy is the perfect place to meet up! Interactive elements help give you a better understanding and appreciation for the variety of treasures you’ll see.

Stop in the Cheer area where you’ll have the opportunity to test the might of your cheering voice in the Indy Fan Cheer booth. This booth measures a good scream and compares it to the decibels of a crowd at various Indianapolis sports venues. The Jammin’ Jukebox section includes a music scene map alongside artifacts from Indianapolis’ melodic history. Here you can turn up the headphones and dive into various Indy music venues from the past and present.

In the Ours section, you can discover the neighborhoods that make up the Indianapolis community with a stop at the digital story-sharing booth. Listen to recordings of Indianapolis residents who share what neighborhood they’re from and why they love it there. Then it’s your turn to record your own story. Games await in the Quoted section on Indy-based MadLibs, and Xroads tests your skills on “Who’s That Hoosier?”
