METAMORA, Ind. – Families are invited to Whitewater Canal State Historic Site for a day of outdoor play at Kid’s Discount Day, scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13. Up to two children will ride the historic canal boat Ben Franklin III for $1 when an adult or senior pays general admission.

Kid’s Discount Day is a chance for families to come out and have one last adventure on a horse-drawn canal boat before school begins,” said Anne Fairchild, Whitewater Canal State Historic Site program manager. “Not only will kids have a discount option, but guests ages 90 and older, as well as children ages two and younger, will receive free admission.”

Metamora has more than 50 unique shopping opportunities, several bed and breakfasts and various inns for lodging. Visit metamoraindiana.com or franklincountyin.com for details.

About Whitewater Canal
Whitewater Canal, one of the few remaining canals in Indiana, was built in the early 1800s and includes 56 locks to accommodate a gradual drop of nearly 500 feet. The 25-minute cruise passes the Duck Creek Aqueduct, a covered bridge that carries the canal 16 feet over Duck Creek. Boat rides begin at noon and leave the dock every hour. The last departure is at 4 p.m.

After the era of canal transportation ended, Whitewater Canal was used as a source of water power for the Metamora Grist Mill, which produces cornmeal the same today as it did more than 100 years ago. The mill is open to visitors Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The operation is closed on most holidays and will close for the year on Nov. 20. Admission is free.

Whitewater Canal State Historic Site is part of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites. Canal rides are normally $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and $3 for children. Boat rides are available Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., now through October 31. Depending on canal conditions, the schedule is subject to change.
