EXHIBITION – Ice Age Graveyards

During the last Ice Age, ancient elephants roamed Indiana. Come discover the mastodons and mammoths that were Indiana’s last native giants. Visit Fred (@FredIndiana), the museum’s iconic mastodon skeleton and other Ice Age wonders. Ice Age Graveyards is an exciting look at Indiana’s chilly past, presented in a cool new way. Perfect for children of all ages.

EXHIBITION – 100 Years Later: Indiana in the First World War

From April 6, 2017 through Nov 11, 2018, the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites will celebrate the 100^th anniversary of the First World War. With several installations and exhibitions available in our public spaces, the ISMHS will explore Indiana’s contributions to the war effort. Along with the personal and political sacrifices Hoosiers made, visitors will learn more about this challenging historical period, as well as honoring Indiana’s veterans.

Women in World War I
Now to November 12, 2017

During World War I, women played many important roles. This exhibition explores how women supported the war efforts, whether serving in uniform or volunteering for organizations like the Red Cross and Y.W.C.A.  All of the posters are on loan from the Collections of the Indiana Archives and Records Administration.

Wartime Music – Canal Overlook Bridge
Now to November 12, 2017

Song played an important role in the wartime effort. This exhibition of historic sheet music from the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites collection demonstrates the power of patriotic songs during World War I in rousing the home front into action and strengthening morale. A soundtrack of period recordings accompany the display.

Crime-solving mysteries, exploring the environment and making your own clothes can all be yours in a summer camp at the Indiana State Museum! Camps begin in June and each week will deliver new adventures based on the museum’s outstanding exhibits and collections. Campers will be in a safe and educational environment while engaged in topics such as forensic science, archaeology, fashion, nature and history.

EXHIBITION – Stone Country: Then and Now

The Empire State Building. Yankee Stadium. The Pentagon. Not buildings you’d typically associate with Indiana. But all three, and thousands more, come from the bedrock of the Hoosier state – limestone. In 1985, photographer Jeffrey Wolin and writer Scott Russell Sanders published Stone Country. The project documented the limestone industry and its profound impact on the people of southern Indiana. Thirty years later, the two have updated the book to reflect the changing industry. Stone Country: Then & Now will feature 30 pieces showing the three-decade progression of the limestone industry in the Hoosier state.

Chemistry sets and science toys have fascinated children for decades. They reassured parents that their children would be more prepared for prestigious careers, and convinced kids that experiments were daring and exciting. Science at Play, the first major museum exhibition to explore the many facets of these miniature laboratories for children, draws from the Chemical Heritage Foundation’s collection of more than 250 science kits and toys.
This exhibition is part of the Year of Science, presented by Lilly. Organized by the Chemical Heritage Foundation and presented by the White Oak Foundation along with Sarah and John Lechleiter.

Now in its 93^rd year, the annual Hoosier Salon is returning to the Indiana State Museum, showcasing the commitment of both organizations to presenting the best of Indiana’s artists. The juried exhibition of recent art by Indiana’s best artists will remain on view through October 8, 2017. The Hoosier Salon is a statewide nonprofit artist-service organization based in Indianapolis with galleries in Carmel, Indiana and New Harmony, Indiana.

PROGRAM – 13^th Annual Square’s Round: Square Dancing at the ISM

Put on your western-style wear, shine those cowboy boots and prepare to promenade in the museum’s Great Hall! The Indiana State Museum is proud to be the home of the 13^th Annual Square’s Round: Square Dancing at the ISM hosted by the Indiana Dancer’s Association. All are invited to join in the dance. Young and old will be amazed as more than 100 dancers kick up their heels, do-si-do, promenade and much more!

EVENT – Naturalization Ceremony

The ISM hosts the annual naturalization ceremony on National Constitution Day, facilitated by the Indiana District Federal Courts. The ceremony will take place in the museum’s Great Hall.

PROGRAM – Educator Enrichment Series: Museum Studies and Inquiry-Based Learning

What does a museum do? We will answer this question and more as we show how Museum Studies can be a teaching tool. Learn how you can highlight history, science, art, writing and critical thinking skills through activities focused on exhibition design, museum conservation and artifact interpretation. Meet professionals from the museum field with all types of backgrounds who can help expand your grasp of leadership skills and careers within the museum sector.

Poison may bring to mind thoughts of crime, but for many animals and plants, it’s just a part of life. This exhibition from the American Museum of Natural History shows how widespread poisons, venoms and toxins are in nature. Discover the complex interactions between poisonous animals, the ways humans have used natural poisons and ancient myths and legends. Find out how poison is detected, solve mysterious poisonings and learn about medical breakthroughs that poisons have made possible.
The Power of Poison is organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York (www.amnh.org).

EXHIBITION – Log Cabins, Flags and Roses: Lincoln in Quilts

Explore how Abraham Lincoln’s life and political career are reflected in unexpected ways through the popular medium of quilts. The exhibition features styles Lincoln would have been familiar with growing up, including one made by his cousin in 1827; those directly associated with Lincoln through the use of campaign ribbons, silks from his wife Mary Todd’s dresses or those of her friends; Civil War quilts; and memorial quilts as well as a range of campaign and other textiles.

The Indiana State Museum seeks to explore the contributions of Hoosier veterans, highlight the state’s military history and patriotic pride, and explore resources available to veterans returning home. Residents of Indiana are encouraged to participate by electronically contributing photos of veterans and active duty personnel. In addition, the museum will run a canned food drive for HVAF (Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation).

Opening Day Program
November 24

Enjoy the Indianapolis Children’s Choir at 11 a.m. then gather on the museum’s front lawn to witness Santa’s arrival by helicopter at noon.  Once safely on the ground, he will greet the crowd and move to his home in Celebration Crossing.  The day’s festivities include the unveiling of the 92 County ornament tree.  Children of all ages can ride the Santa Claus Express train, pose for a picture with Santa and give him their holiday wish list before he leaves again on Dec. 24.

This year’s Celebration Crossing comes alive with holiday merriment from the sounds of bands, bell and vocal choirs and of course Santa and Mrs. Claus, who will entertain visitors in their cozy home through Dec. 24. Early risers may join Mrs. Claus, Raggedy Ann and Santa’s Elves for breakfast and late sleepers may join Santa for supper.

Children of all ages may ride on the Santa Claus Express, make crafts to take home and take advantage of a playscape for pre-school and primary elementary aged children in Santa’s Playground. Take a trip back in time by gazing into the recreated L.S. Ayres store windows rekindling Christmases past. Special event dates and times will post to indianamuseum.org.

Specifically designed for those who experience sensory processing disorders, this is a morning to explore the museum with some of the interactives and surrounding stimuli switched off. Guests will also have the chance to participate in several unmanned activities with Magformers, Imagination Playground and exploration tables. A fidget will be provided for guests who prefer distractions from unwelcome stimuli.

Join the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana at the Indiana State Museum for the 2017 Holiday Sing on Saturday, December 9. Registration opens at 10 a.m. Girl Scouts are welcome to come and explore the galleries of the Indiana State Museum, meet Santa and Mrs. Claus and ride the Santa Claus Express in nostalgic Celebration Crossing. Embrace the spirit of the season and bring donations that will be delivered to a community organization. PROGRAM – Statehood Day

On December 11, 1816, Indiana became the 19th state to join the Union. On December 11, 2017, the Statehouse will host “Indiana Statehood Day” to celebrate Indiana’s 201st birthday.  The Birthday Party will include interactive activities throughout the statehouse.  There will be presentations by many state agencies and offices designed for 4th grade students. You may schedule your group for the simultaneous programs at the Indiana State Museum, Indiana Historical Society or the Indiana State Library. End the year with a bang with a family-friendly, alcohol-free celebration in the Governor Frank and Judy O’Bannon Great Hall.  Face painting, stilt walkers, clowns and music will highlight the evening. A balloon drop at 8 p.m. allows the little ones to celebrate the New Year in style.

Join the town and visitors for patriotic music, a reading of the Declaration of Independence and a speech. Festivities begin at the Atheneum/Visitors Center and continue with a golf cart parade through town. The afternoon wraps up with a traditional picnic featuring music, games and free root beer in Maclure Park.
The celebration is sponsored by Friends of the Working Men’s Institute, Historic New Harmony and the Kiwanis Club.

Make connections between princesses and history. Our participants, the little princesses, will be attending school, Princess Academy to be exact. They will learn manners of the 1800s, how to curtsy, how to write with a quill and how letters were sealed and stamped. They will make a princess-themed craft and learn about dances and games of the 1800s. During snack, cookies and punch, they will learn about princesses and royal families of the 1800s and today. To top it off, each princess will get a chance to have their photo taken!

PROGRAM – Bluegrass Jamboree

Volunteer musicians gather on the site to play a variety of bluegrass, gospel and folk music. Bring an instrument and join the musicians, or bring a lawn chair and sit back and enjoy the tunes.

Enjoy a lecture by artist Michele Wood that incorporates the history of Levi Coffin House, stories of the Underground Railroad and songs from her book Like A Bird: Art of American Slave Songs (concept and illustrations by Michele Wood, written by Cynthia Grady).

PROGRAM – Adventure Angel Camp

Registration for reach camp will close two weeks before the start of each camp. Registration includes free t-shirt, snacks and lunch on Friday.

At Angel Mounds, we understand the importance of play; and this end of summer camp is all about play. Anything goes during this week celebrating the end of summer! Kids will love sloshing through the mud in our end-of-the-week Camp Mud Run; put their ingenuity to the test constructing a giant slip & slide; and participate in a host of other team building challenges. If you know us, we go big or go home, and Adventure Angel is no exception. Inspiring curiosity, creativity, and camaraderie, this camp is sure to be the highlight of the summer!

PROGRAM – Sunday at Home featuring Craig Brenner

This performance, part of T. C. Steele’s monthly Sunday at Home series, is the result of a 2017 Arts in the Parks and Historic Sites grant. Craig will play piano, provide percussion instruments and will focus on music by Indiana musicians. Craig will also talk about Hoosier composers and musicians.

Was it Colonel Mustard in the Library? Or Mr. Culbertson in the Blue Room? Can you figure out the real life game of Clue? PROGRAM – Stargazing and Night Hike

Admission: $4 per person; Guests under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian

The site’s naturalist will lead guests through Sower’s Woods to introduce them to the creatures of the night. Bats, owls, moths and other critters may make an appearance. Depending upon the clarity of the sky, stargazing will be available to identify major constellations, satellites and other celestial bodies by telescope thanks to Fort Wayne Astronomical Society. Bring binoculars for a closer view of the stars.

PROGRAM – Solar Eclipse Viewing Party

Come celebrate this rare astronomical event. According to the NASA Total Solar Eclipse Interactive Map, Angel Mounds State Historic Site will be at 98.99 percent obscuration. The site will remain open through the duration of the solar eclipse.

PROGRAM – ‘Harris Davis: A Life in Art’ Open House

This exhibition will be included in the Arts & Antiques Stroll, a quarterly event when art galleries and shops of New Harmony provide special programming and extended hours. The exhibit features artwork by Hoosier artist Harry Davis, one of the most awarded artists in the history of the Hoosier Salon. For 37 years, he taught drawing and painting at Herron School of Art. One of the highlights of the exhibit is a painting Davis fashioned from tent materials while he was stationed in Italy during WWII.
The exhibition was produced by the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites.

PROGRAM – 29^th Annual Great Outdoor Art Contest

Admission: Early Bird Registration (Aug. 1 through 31): $10 for adults; $9 Friends members; $5    Kids. Regular Registration (Sept. 1 through 9): $15 for adults; $14 Friends members; $10 Kids. $2 parking for the general public.

Judged plein air (outdoor) art contest, with an afternoon outdoor concert. Pre-registered artists create artwork and visitors have the opportunity to observe the process of creation outdoors. All work submitted for judging must be created the day of the contest. Food available for purchase along with an outdoor concert.

Tap into the spirit of the past and explore the rich Native American heritage. During this event, local school children will see modern Native singing and dancing, experience first-hand ancient skills like atlatl spear-throwing and even get a chance to visit the recreated village in the museum. Through dynamic activities and personal encounters, students will learn about Indiana’s rich history and its first peoples.
