Open House to celebrate famous Hoosier’s birthday

ROME CITY, Ind. – The public is invited to the Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site on Thursday, Aug. 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. for Gene Stratton-Porter’s Birthday Open House. The event celebrates the life of Gene Stratton-Porter, Indiana’s most widely read female author.

“This open house is a celebration sharing Gene’s birthday and her accomplishments with the community,” said Tiffany Conrad, the site’s interpretive naturalist. “We created a family-friendly event with birthday cake, poetry readings and a surprise guest appearance. We invite everyone to join us for the celebration!”

Birthday cake will be served promptly at 2 p.m. An actor portraying Gene Stratton-Porter will welcome guests and discuss Stratton-Porter’s passion for nature at 2:15 p.m. Hoosier poet, Deb Levy, will present a poem inspired by the Cabin at Wildflower Woods and discuss how Stratton-Porter has inspired her at 3:15 p.m. Levy is appearing in partnership with the Indiana Arts Commission and the Arts in the Parks and Historic Sites grant program.

This event is free and open to the public. Donations are encouraged.
