ROME CITY, Ind. – Due to many Indiana Conservation Officers aiding those affected by Hurricane Harvey, the Indiana Hunter’s Education course slated for Saturday, Sept. 2 and Saturday, Sept. 9 at Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site has been canceled. The annual Wild Game Cookout is still slated for Saturday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m.

“Many of Indiana’s Conservation Officers are being deployed to Texas to assist with rescue and recovery efforts made necessary by Hurricane Harvey,” said Tiffany Conrad, Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site interpretive naturalist. “We greatly appreciate their efforts and in order to be prepared for any further response, our Hunter’s Education course has been canceled.”

The cookout will take place as scheduled, and will feature a selection of wild game including a variety of waterfowl, venison and fish. Previous years have also included squirrel, bear, Northern Pike, Walleye, quail, pheasant, alligator, rabbit and more! Guests will also enjoy a dessert made with paw paws, also known as “Indiana bananas.”

A suggested donation of $5 per person is asked for the cookout and all proceeds will be donated to the Indiana Nongame Wildlife Fund to help protect our endangered animals. The event is open to the public and will be held rain or shine.
