Today in honor of #WomensHIstoryMonth, we're celeb Today in honor of #WomensHIstoryMonth, we're celebrating Catharine Coffin, of the Levi and Catharine Coffin House State Historic Site!

Levi and Catharine’s house was known as the Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad. From 1826-1847, the Coffins fed and clothed more than 2,000 freedom-seekers escaping slavery.

Catharine led sewing circles with other women in town to make clothes for the freedom-seekers. To them, she was known as “Aunt Katy,” a term of endearment. To do what Catharine Coffin did took skill, determination and fearlessness. As Levi Coffin said of Catharine: “It was never too cold or stormy, or the hour of night too late, for my wife to rise from sleep, and provide food and comfortable lodging for the fugitives. Her sympathy for those in distress never tired, and her efforts in their behalf never abated."
